Macular Degeneration Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive disease of the retina wherein the light-sensing cells in the central area of vision (the macula) stop working and eventually die. The disease is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, and it is most common in people who are age sixty and over. AMD is the leading cause of legal blindness in senior citizens. An estimated fifteen million people in the United States have it, and approximately two million new cases are diagnosed annually.
Most cases of macular degeneration are the "dry," or "atrophic", form, distinguished by yellowish deposits of debris in the retina. Called "drusen," the material comprising these deposits is usually carried away by the same blood vessels which bring nutrients to the retina. But for reasons yet unknown, this process is diminished in macular degeneration. Some of the potential causes being studied are inflammation, inadequate blood circulation in the retina, and premature aging of the sight cells due to genetic deficiencies. In addition, environmental, behavioral, and dietary factors are thought to contribute to the progress of the disease in those who are susceptible to it.

Enzymes in the epithelial lining of the intestinal tract split Beta-carotene into two molecules of vitamin A whenever the body needs it. Beta-carotene is the most abundant precursor of vitamin A in fruits and vegetables.

Zinc is necessary for the functioning of over 300 different enzymes and, as such it plays a vital role in an enormous number of biological processes. Zinc is widely distributed in microorganisms, plants and animals. In humans, the highest concentrations of zinc are found in the liver, pancreas, kidneys, bone, and muscles. Zinc is highly concentrated in parts of the eye, prostate gland, sperm, skin, hair, and nails. Zinc is also involved in sensory perceptions of taste, smell and vision. Necessary for salt-taste perception, dark adaptation, and night vision.
Selenium is necessary for proper glutathione peroxidase activity in the eyes. Decreased selenium in aqueous humor and serum of patients with senile cataracts may reflect defective antioxidant defense, which leads to the formation of cataracts.
Chromium is biologically active only in the trivalent state in which it forms complexes with organic compounds. The most important of these complexes is glucose tolerance factor (GTF) which is comprised of trivalent chromium, niacin, glycine, glutamic acid, and cysteine. Patients with primary open-angle glaucoma have reduced erythrocyte chromium levels.
Grape Seed Extract: Condensed tannins termed oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), or procyanidolic oligomers (PCOs), are the main active constituents found in grape seed and are possibly some of the most important natural products to be discovered in the last several years. They are flavonoid-rich compounds, which are being heavily regarded as some of the most potent antioxidants found in nature.OPCs have been reported effective in improving the visual performances after glare as well as the visual adaptation to low luminances. An open trial of 147 individuals with retinopathy were administered OPCs from grape seed (100mg) daily. The authors reported successful treatment of exudations secondary to hypoxia. The matrix metalloproteinases (MMP's), a protein which plays a key role in the extracellular matrix turnover, is thought to be involved in ocular pathologies such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, vitreous degeneration and corneal stroma ulceration. An in vitro study using OPCs from grape seed was reported to inhibit this type III collegenase activity and may be beneficial in reducing the damaging effects on ocular structures.
Lutein specifically concentrates in the macula, which is a small area in the center of the retina in the eye. The macula lies directly behind the lens and is the area of the eye that receives the most light. Lutein protects the macula by filtering out potentially damaging forms of light. Thus, lutein is associated with protection from various diseases of the eyes, especially age-related macular degeneration, which is a leading cause of blindness in older adults. Within weeks, lutein supplementation results in increased macular pigment density.
Zeaxanthin is one of two carotenoids that occur at high levels in the retina of the eyes, the other being lutein. The greatest amounts of zeaxanthin occur in the macular region, whereas lutein is distributed throughout the entire retina. These compounds are closely related and when they are found in plants, they both seem to occur together. For this reason, zeaxanthin and lutein are often discussed together, and in fact they are sometimes referred to as lutein-zeaxanthin. In one study, researchers reported that humans are capable of converting some lutein they have ingested into zeaxanthin. These carotenoids have two main functions, they absorb the potentially harmful blue-violet wavelengths of light energy that come into the eye, and they also function as antioxidants.
L-Taurine is concentrated in the eyes where it helps protect the photoreceptors in the retina of the eye from damage.
